About Memorial Day
Memorial Day began after the Civil War as Decoration Day, when towns in the North and South set aside a day to lay flowers on soldiers' graves. In 1868 a veterans' organization chose May 30 for a national observance, and that date held for a century. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved it to the last Monday in May starting in 1971, creating the three-day weekend most Americans know today.
The holiday is meant for remembering the fallen: families visit cemeteries, volunteers place small flags on graves, and a National Moment of Remembrance asks everyone to pause for one minute at 3:00 PM local time. It also serves as the unofficial start of summer, with the first trips to the beach and the first backyard barbecue of the year.
