About Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is a US federal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November. Before the Civil War, each state chose its own day. Abraham Lincoln settled on the last Thursday of November in 1863, and in 1939 Franklin Roosevelt moved it a week earlier to lengthen the shopping season, leaving states split between two Thanksgivings for a few years. Congress ended the confusion in 1941 by fixing the fourth Thursday.
The day revolves around a shared meal: roast turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie, with a parade in the morning and football in the afternoon. Many people take Friday off too, which is how the day after became Black Friday.
Canadian Thanksgiving is on the second Monday of October, next on Monday, October 11, 2027.
