About Daylight Saving Time

Daylight saving time moves the clock one hour ahead for the warmer months, so sunset comes an hour later. When does daylight saving start? North of the equator, in March. When does daylight saving time end? In the US and Canada, on the first Sunday in November, under the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Europe switches on the last Sundays of March and October, all countries at the same instant.

Ask when is daylight savings in Phoenix or Honolulu, and the answer is never: Arizona outside the Navajo Nation and Hawaii keep standard time all year, as do China, India, Japan, and most countries near the equator. The countdown above shows only the change that affects your own clock.

Daylight Savings Countdown for Your Time Zone

Most people say daylight savings, with an s, though the official name is daylight saving time. Either way, this countdown to daylight savings reads your zone's rules from your browser's time zone database, the same data your phone uses to change its clock overnight.

When Do Clocks Go Forward and Back?

When do clocks go forward? North of the equator, in March: on the second Sunday in the US and Canada and on the last Sunday in the UK and the European Union. When do clocks go back? In the fall, on the first Sunday of November in North America and the last Sunday of October in Europe. The Southern Hemisphere runs the other way, so Australia moves forward in October and back in April.

FAQ

When do we spring forward?

In the US and Canada, clocks move from 2:00 AM to 3:00 AM on the second Sunday in March; the next time is Sunday, March 14, 2027. Europe follows on the last Sunday in March, and Australia does it in October.

When do we fall back?

North American clocks go from 2:00 AM back to 1:00 AM on the first Sunday in November, next on Sunday, November 1, 2026. That night has an extra hour, so set an alarm by the new time if you have an early start.

When is the next daylight savings time?

It depends on where you are. The line under the countdown names your time zone and the date, time, and direction of its next switch, read from the time zone database built into your browser. If the countdown says your zone doesn't observe daylight saving time, your clock will not change.

Is daylight saving time going away?

Not yet. The US Congress has debated making daylight time permanent, and the European Parliament voted in 2019 to end seasonal changes, but neither plan has taken effect. Until a law changes, the dates on this page stay the same each year.
