About the Vernal Equinox

Astronomers date the start of spring from the vernal equinox, the instant the Sun crosses the celestial equator on its way north. On that day sunrise and sunset are roughly twelve hours apart almost everywhere on Earth, and from then until June the northern days keep getting longer. Because the equinox is a single instant rather than a whole day, this countdown runs to the exact minute, not to midnight.

South of the equator the calendar flips: the March equinox opens autumn there, and spring arrives with the September equinox. The page guesses your hemisphere from your time zone, and the switch above corrects it if the guess is wrong.

Weather services use meteorological seasons instead, and their spring always starts on March 1 (September 1 in the Southern Hemisphere).

How Many Days Until Spring?

The first tile counts the days until spring, and the hours, minutes, and seconds next to it run down to the minute the equinox happens. That makes this spring countdown a little different from a holiday timer: the target can fall at breakfast time in one city and late at night in another, so the line under the countdown converts it to your clock.

Gardeners use a countdown to spring to plan seed starting, cyclists to plan the first long ride without gloves, and teachers to time a lesson on why the seasons change. Whatever your reason, the page needs no setup and keeps running for as long as the tab stays open.

FAQ

When does spring start?

Astronomical spring in the Northern Hemisphere starts at the March equinox. In 2027 that moment is 8:25 PM UTC on Saturday, March 20, 2027. South of the equator, spring starts with the September equinox instead.

Is the spring equinox the same thing as the vernal equinox?

Yes. "Vernal" comes from the Latin word for spring, so the two names describe the same instant. Scientists increasingly say "March equinox," which avoids confusion for people in the Southern Hemisphere, where March brings autumn.

Why isn't the first day of spring always March 21?

A common year of 365 days is about six hours shorter than one trip of Earth around the Sun, so the equinox comes roughly six hours later each year until a leap day pulls it back. The result is a date that drifts between March 19 and 21; for the next few decades it lands on March 20 in most years.
